The security industry is one of the few fields where a demonstrable portfolio routinely beats a credential. Hiring managers are trying to answer one question — can this person do the work? — and nothing answers it faster than evidence you already have.
Build artefacts, not just certs
- Write up a vulnerability you found and disclosed responsibly, end to end.
- Publish a home-lab build: what you broke, how, and what you learned defending it.
- Contribute a detection rule or tool fix to an open-source project.
Certifications open doors and prove baseline knowledge — keep earning them. But the candidates who stand out pair the cert with proof of curiosity. A public trail of work tells a hiring manager more than any line on a CV.
