Breaking Into Security Without a CS Degree

Hiring managers don't care about your diploma. They care about whether you can demonstrate the work. Here's the portfolio that does it.

The security industry is one of the few fields where a demonstrable portfolio routinely beats a credential. Hiring managers are trying to answer one question — can this person do the work? — and nothing answers it faster than evidence you already have.

Build artefacts, not just certs

  • Write up a vulnerability you found and disclosed responsibly, end to end.
  • Publish a home-lab build: what you broke, how, and what you learned defending it.
  • Contribute a detection rule or tool fix to an open-source project.

Certifications open doors and prove baseline knowledge — keep earning them. But the candidates who stand out pair the cert with proof of curiosity. A public trail of work tells a hiring manager more than any line on a CV.
